Major General Larry D. New
Deputy Director for Force Protection, J-8

Maj. Gen. Larry D. New is Deputy Director for Force Protection, Force Structure, Resources and Assessment Directorate, Joint Staff, the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. He is responsible for the organization, analysis and prioritization of joint warfighting capability needs proposals within the Force Protection functional area. This includes chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defense; air and missile defense; and personnel and infrastructure protection. General New represents the services and combatant commands warfighting needs in the Department of Defense's Joint Capabilities Integration and Development System process. He serves as the proponent for service and combatant command CBRND, AMD, and personnel and infrastructure protection operational requirements in DoD's Capabilities and Acquisition Process.

General New received his commission in 1976 as a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy. His primary flying experience has been in the F-15 air superiority fighter as a fighter weapons instructor pilot. General New has commanded at the squadron, group and wing levels, and has served in staff assignments at the major command and Joint Staff levels. During Operation Southern Watch, the general was Director of Operations and Plans, Joint Task Force Southwest Asia, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for which he received the Joint Service Commendation Medal and Joint Meritorious Unit Award. Prior to his current assignment, he was the Director of Operations, Headquarters Air Force Materiel Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.

General New is a command pilot with more than 3,300 flying hours.
